Where does the Aswan to Cairo train depart?

The sleeper departs from Aswan Railway Station in central Aswan, close to the city's market area and a short transfer from many hotels and Nile-side accommodation.

Arrive at least 45 minutes before departure. Aswan Station is easier to navigate than Cairo's major stations, but you still need time to enter, confirm the platform and find the correct carriage.

Read the full Aswan Train Station guide for boarding, transfers and facilities.

Does the Aswan to Cairo sleeper stop in Luxor?

Yes. The train travels north through Luxor, but passengers travelling to Cairo remain on board.

You do not need to collect luggage or change trains at Luxor. Keep the cabin until your ticketed destination and follow any instructions given by the carriage attendant.

How long is the train from Aswan to Cairo?

Allow approximately 13 to 15 hours for the northbound sleeper journey. The exact duration depends on the selected service, intermediate stops and operating conditions.

Build a buffer after arrival. Do not schedule an international flight or time-critical connection immediately after the train's planned arrival.

Can you visit Abu Simbel before taking the train?

It may be possible to visit Abu Simbel and travel north by sleeper on the same day, but only when the excursion returns to Aswan with a generous buffer before departure.

Road delays, a late tour return or hotel-luggage collection can create unnecessary risk. Confirm the train time first, then decide whether the day's itinerary is realistic.

What is the Egypt sleeper train really like?

The Aswan journey is longer than Luxor to Cairo, so the cabin becomes your room for the evening and most of the night. Dinner is served after departure and breakfast before arrival. Two classes run on the same train: Standard and Elite.

Honest advice. Keep overnight essentials, medication, chargers, water and a light layer within easy reach. The cabin gets cold at night. Power sockets and Wi-Fi cannot be guaranteed on every carriage, so charge devices before boarding. Meals are practical rather than gourmet.

What is included in the sleeper cabin?

IncludedDetail

BedFold-out berth, pillow and blanket

Cabin attendantAvailable during the journey
Toilet and wash areaShared within the carriage

Is a single sleeper cabin private?

Yes. A single cabin is reserved for one passenger. A double cabin is intended for two travellers. A person booking a double cabin alone may be allocated with another passenger of the same gender. Travellers who require guaranteed privacy should select a single cabin.

Where does the Aswan sleeper arrive in Cairo?

Current sleeper operations use Upper Egypt Station, also called Bashtil, for Cairo-side services. Your issued ticket remains the final authority for the exact arrival station and time.

Arrange transport from the correct station rather than relying on an airport transfer or hotel driver who assumes you are arriving at Ramses Station.

See the Bashtil Station guide for arrival directions.

Should you take Aswan to Cairo direct, or break the journey in Luxor?

Choose Aswan to Cairo direct whenConsider breaking the journey in Luxor when
You have already visited LuxorYou still want several days in Luxor
You want one overnight journeyYou prefer a shorter sleeper journey
Your next stop is CairoYour itinerary naturally moves north in stages
