Planning tips that actually help
Book your hotels around the train, not the other way round
The night you spend on the train is a night you do not need a hotel. Book Cairo up to the night before you travel, and Luxor or Aswan from the morning you arrive.
It is the most common thing people get wrong when mapping out Egypt, and it costs them a room they never sleep in.
The train leaves Cairo in the evening and hotel checkout is usually late morning, so there is a long gap in between. Speak to your hotel about keeping your luggage for the day, and you can spend the whole afternoon in Cairo rather than waiting on it.
You never have to chase the ticket
Once your cabin is paid for, the rest happens on its own. The system reserves your berth with Egypt Railways and emails the ticket to you automatically the moment it is issued.
So you can book the train early, tick it off, and get on with flights and hotels. There is no date to put in your calendar and nothing to come back and check.
What if my preferred date is sold out?
Check dates one or two days either side, as trains do not sell out uniformly across the calendar. A date that shows full on a Tuesday may have availability on Wednesday. You can also check the alternative trains on the same date as some run later in the evening with more capacity.
